Paradox Interactive and White Wolf will close the public feedback period for the first alpha playtest of Vampire: The Masquerade this Friday, August 28. The phase included in-person sessions at Gen Con in Indianapolis, as well as digital distribution through Demiplane and DriveThruRPG.

World of Darkness creative director Jess Lanzillo confirmed that survey data will shape the project's next version, Alpha 2.0, which is scheduled for September. The team has also made one design decision before completing its analysis: the removal of the experimental Drama mechanic.

During testing, the abstract token pool used to alter the Storyteller's pacing and the difficulty level of non-player characters conflicted with horror systems already in the game, such as the Beast, Humanity and Masquerade exposure. Lanzillo said Drama increased anxiety as the pool grew, but worked more like a management task than an element integrated into the fiction.

The director also said the game already provides ways to build a growing sense of threat through Humanity and Masquerade exposure levels. As a result, the mechanic duplicated existing functions without delivering the expected kind of interaction.

Maturing Disciplines received a positive response in testing. Combined with Blood Surge, the system allows powers to be raised to higher levels at an immediate cost. The approach reduces mental complexity during character advancement while keeping risk at the heart of the rules. The team is seeking community suggestions to determine a permanent name for the feature before the next version.

The current playtest document brings together five core sections, covering character creation, clan disciplines, Humanity rules and the game's fundamentals. Contributions had to be submitted by the end of tonight to influence the Alpha 2.0 revision.
